    Fibers spreading worldwide: Microplastics and other anthropogenic litter in an Arctic freshwater lake

    We investigated the presence of microplastics and other anthropogenic litter in the sediments adhered to rocks of an Arctic freshwater lake at Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard Archipelago, 78°N; 11°E). Most of the sampled microparticles were fibers (>90%). The identification of polymer types and additives was performed by combining three spectroscopic techniques, namely Raman Microscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared microspectroscopy (μFTIR) and Synchrotron Radiation μFTIR (SR-FTIR). SR-FTIR confirmed the presence of poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers, while RAMAN spectroscopy provided evidence of fibers containing industrial additives. Our results estimated an average concentration of 400 microparticles/m2 of rocks identified as anthropogenic litter, which included an estimation of 90 microplastics/m2 identified as polyester fibers; the rest are mostly natural fibers with evidence of anthropogenic origin.     Entrenamiento en habilidades básicas de gestión de grupos para la mejora de la competencia transversal de hablar en público: protocolo para alumnos de posgrado de Psicología

    El presente proyecto se enmarca en la mejora educativa de dos grandes bloques: 1)La mejora de competencias transversales indispensables en la carrera académica de cualquier alumno universitario. En este proyecto en concreto, se abordará la tarea de hablar en público, que ostenta un papel central en el desempeño de los alumnos en la práctica totalidad de asignaturas y en la potenciación de sus destrezas básicas a ofrecer en su futuro profesional. 2)La mejora educativa de alumnos del Master Oficial en Psicología General Sanitaria, como parte aplicada de su formación. Atendiendo al primer bloque, son múltiples las situaciones en las que los alumnos han de enfrentarse a un público y exponer o defender un trabajo, opinión etc… Ante esta situación, tradicionalmente se ha dado mayor peso a cuestiones de contenido (lo que se expone) y no tanto a cuestiones de forma (cómo se hace). La demanda de servicios que presten atención y ayuda en este ámbito va en aumento. Desde un punto de vista comunitario cada vez son más las asociaciones, fundaciones, escuelas que se dirigen a potenciar esta destreza (p. ej. ToastMaster). En el mismo sentido, desde un contexto clínico, se observa la misma tendencia de demanda de ayuda, en este caso profesional, para hacer frente a este tipo de situaciones, fundamentalmente por parte de alumnos universitarios. La ansiedad a exponer es un fenómeno ampliamente estudiado y relacionados con síndromes clínicos, como por ejemplo la Fobia Social. La carrera universitaria exige a sus alumnos tareas, ejercicios, exámenes… que requieren la puesta en práctica de esta competencia. Además, no es un fenómeno exclusivo de ninguna disciplina concreta, por lo que esta competencia es transversal a diferentes asignaturas y ramas del conocimiento. Un enfoque comunitario (desde la universidad) y focalizado (para universitarios) supondría atender a la competencia transversal de hablar en público de una manera formal y sistematizada, centrándose en el aprendizaje de la forma (cómo se hace) y de aquellos factores que pudieran interferir (ansiedad, timidez…). El segundo bloque que define este proyecto va dirigido a la mejora educativa de los alumnos del Máster Oficial en Psicología General Sanitaria. Parte de su formación práctica supone la confección, planificación y ejecución de planes de psicoeducativos de salud. Todos los miembros de este proyecto guardamos relación, de una u otra manera con la Clínica Universitaria de Psicología de la UCM (CUP-UCM), centro de prácticas del itinerario del citado master. Esto supone una excepcional oportunidad de añadir a su plan formativo de rotación por la CUP-UCM, el diseño y ejecución de estos talleres, siempre bajo estrecha supervisión y acompañamiento de miembros del proyecto

    A nationwide monitoring of atmospheric microplastic deposition

    8 Pág.Plastic production continues to increase every year, yet it is widely acknowledged that a significant portion of this material ends up in ecosystems as microplastics (MPs). Among all the environmental compartments affected by MPs, the atmosphere remains the least well-known. Here, we conducted a one-year simultaneous monitoring of atmospheric MPs deposition in ten urban areas, each with different population sizes, economic activities, and climates. The objective was to assess the role of the atmosphere in the fate of MPs by conducting a nationwide quantification of atmospheric MP deposition. To achieve this, we deployed collectors in ten different urban areas across continental Spain and the Canary Islands. We implemented a systematic sampling methodology with rigorous quality control/quality assurance, along with particle-oriented identification and quantification of anthropogenic particle deposition, which included MPs and industrially processed natural fibres. Among the sampled MPs, polyester fibres were the most abundant, followed by acrylic polymers, polypropylene, and alkyd resins. Their equivalent sizes ranged from 22 μm to 398 μm, with a median value of 71 μm. The particle size distribution of MPs showed fewer large particles than expected from a three-dimensional fractal fragmentation pattern, which was attributed to the higher mobility of small particles, especially fibres. The atmospheric deposition rate of MPs ranged from 5.6 to 78.6 MPs m-2 day-1, with the higher values observed in densely populated areas such as Barcelona and Madrid. Additionally, we detected natural polymers, mostly cellulosic fibres with evidence of industrial processing, with a deposition rate ranging from 6.4 to 58.6 particles m-2 day-1. There was a positive correlation was found between the population of the study area and the median of atmospheric MP deposition, supporting the hypothesis that urban areas act as sources of atmospheric MPs.     Cuentos de nunca acabar. Aproximaciones desde la interculturalidad, surge después de la pandemia y su imposibilidad de socializar “en persona” con los compañeros de eventuales encuentros, porque la Comprensión Lectora tenía que reinventarse para su nueva reflexión cognitiva, adaptación contextual y reconstrucción del conocimiento. Este renovado enfoque de la realidad postpandemia, concebido en el marco de la educación intercultural comunitaria, busca potencializar los entornos naturales, sociales y culturales como recursos de aprendizaje multidisciplinario a través del lenguaje animado de los cuentos. En este marco, había que dinamizar la asignatura de Comunicación Oral y Escrita, que se dicta en los Primeros Niveles de los Centros de Apoyo de Otavalo, Cayambe, Latacunga y Riobamba, mediante un eje transversal donde los estudiantes escriban fundamentados en valores de la cosmovisión andina, considerando que provienen de varios lugares de la sierra y amazonía ecuatoriana. Todo surgió del encuentro presencial de un sábado cualquiera donde los estudiantes realizaban ejercicios narrativos, logrando una apreciable respuesta de imaginación, más emotiva que la clásica tarea de las Unidades, tanto así que, pasados unos días, seguían llegando sus escritos a mi correo. Entonces nos pusimos manos a la obra, cada estudiante tendría dos opciones como Actividad Integradora, la primera consistía en escribir un cuento de su propia inspiración, y la segunda analizar un clásico para comentar sus valores y antivalores. La mayor parte de estudiantes decidió escribir su propio cuento, de donde se escogieron algunas participaciones que podrían considerarse originales, para una edición que, respetando la transcripción de la tradición oral que prima en los sectores comunitarios, nos concretamos en revisar la puntuación y ortografía para publicarlos. Con esto buscamos innovar la Actividad Integradora, por algo más práctico y operativo para configurar los Objetos de Aprendizaje que buscamos.     First detection of microplastics in the freshwater of an Antarctic Specially Protected Area

    Microplastics have been found in all environmental compartments investigated so far, even reaching remote areas. However, their presence in Antarctic freshwaters has not been yet reported. Here, we investigated the occurrence of microplastics in a stream from an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island - ASPA No. 126), which is subject to stringent environmental protection measures as a result of which it is considered a pristine international reference site for inland waters research. Our results showed the presence of three types of microplastics in a freshwater seasonal stream, namely four polyester fibers, one black and three transparent; two acrylic fibers, one transparent and one red; and two transparent polytetrafluoroethylene films. The length and width of these fibers and films were in the 400–3546 μm (average 1118 μm), and 10–1026 μm (average 199 μm) ranges respectively. The concentration of MP was 0.95 items/1000 m3 with estimated variability in the 0.47–1.43 items/1000 m3 range.     Microplastics (MPs) have been found everywhere as they are easily transported between environmental compartments. Through their transport, MPs are quickly colonized by microorganisms; this microbial community is known as the plastisphere. Here, we characterized the plastisphere of three MPs, one biodegradable (PHB) and two non-biodegradables (HDPE and LDPE), deployed in an Arctic freshwater lake for eleven days. The plastisphere was found to be complex, confirming that about a third of microbial colonizers were viable. Plastisphere was compared to microbial communities on the surrounding water and microbial mats on rocks at the bottom of the lake. Microbial mats followed by MPs showed the highest diversity regarding both prokaryotes and eukaryotes as compared to water samples; however, for fungi, MPs showed the highest diversity of the tested substrates. Significant differences on microbial assemblages on the three tested substrates were found; regarding microbial assemblages on MPs, bacterial genera found in polar environments such as Mycoplana, Erythromicrobium and Rhodoferax with species able to metabolize recalcitrant chemicals were abundant. Eukaryotic communities on MPs were characterized by the presence of ciliates of the genera Stentor, Vorticella and Uroleptus and the algae Cryptomonas, Chlamydomonas, Tetraselmis and Epipyxis. These ciliates normally feed on algae so that the complexity of these assemblages may serve to unravel trophic relationships between co-existing taxa. Regarding fungal communities on MPs, the most abundant genera were Betamyces, Cryptococcus, Arrhenia and Paranamyces. MPs, particularly HDPE, were enriched in the sulI and ermB antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) which may raise concerns about human health–related issues as ARGs may be transferred horizontally between bacteria.
